Old "Anadrol 50" Texas yearbooks recycle memories
, manager of the Austin Public Library's Recycled Reads, flips through a leather bound 1949 yearbook from .
Pages are filled with black and white candids, the formal headshots, the faculty pages and homages to various clubs. Calisthenics! Majorettes! And there's the wrestling team, posing for the camera bare chested and wearing tights.
Recycled Reads is an Austin Public Library store that raises money for the system "Anadrol 50" by selling thousands of tomes withdrawn from libraries across the city. Since opening, the store has diverted more than than 600 tons of waste from the landfill by selling and donating books.
At any time, Recycled Reads has several dozen yearbooks on its shelves that sell for $10 to $30. Of course, there is the odd exception, such as the 1901 yearbook the Cactus that sold for $100.
Reed loves these paper time machines. They say so much about their eras fashion, hairstyles, academics and recreational activities. They reflect the evolution of the country's political and social changes, as seen in the number of women and people of color represented in the yearbooks' pages.
And, of course, they bring back memories.
"I hated home ec," Reed says, pausing to look at a picture of a few ladies in a kitchen. "I wanted to take music class."
Who would give away their yearbook? "People are cleaning out their parents' homes or moving them to assisted living centers and they just can't take everything," Reed said.
Even if you're not searching for your own yearbook, perusing those on the store's shelves makes for a good time. There are books from , UT and other colleges. A 1982 copy of from is on a shelf, along with a 2011 yearbook. The picture of the sheetcake reading "Happy Birthday Justin Bieber" is a classic destined to haunt its chef for decades to come.

Fabulous names of old abound: Lois, Marjorie, Dorothy, Norman, Eugene. Then there's the fantastic photo of the school's utility department, starring two extremely irritated looking women up front and center of the group shot.
One sentence from the 1965 Peregrinus from the UT School of Law "By his second year, the student will have overcome any antipathy he may have held toward women" paired with a lovey dovey couple is particularly instructive.
